Gilbert, two years older than Anne and studying at Anne's level after his father fell and became ill, was unable to continue his studies. Gilbert initially called Anne Carrots. Amybeth McNulty portrays Anne, who is 13 years old and has been in an orphanage as well as the home of strangers. Anne gets sent by mistake in Prince Edward Island in late 1890s. She lives there with Matthew Cuthbert and Marilla Cuthbert. The show ends in 1919, and Gilbert and Anne remain happily together. Gilbert is 55 years old and is still deeply affectionate with Anne.
